On a rainy Tuesday night, the Manchester Universities Technical Theatre Society (MUTTS) meets at The Arch for a Lights Workshop with the ChamSys MagicQ console and software in preparation for crewing at upcoming performances of the season.

These early workshops are primarily geared towards introducing new members to professional lighting and sound mixing techniques and equipment as well as providing practice to continuing members on their choice of equipment. The meeting place, aptly referred to as The Arch, is obscure, hidden under a bridge. But behind the unobtrusive door lies a colourful cluttered universe of sets, props, scaffolding, lights, speakers, cables, nuts, bolts and all sorts of other odds and ends. It is here that the students who choose to work invisibly, behind-the-scenes of the various plays, concerts, festivals and performances meet every week to figure out and practice their magic.
